Helena Rodríguez, Data Scientist at MADRIJA, Takes Part in the Latest EPIC Foundation Event

Jan 17, 2025

The EPIC Foundation organized the meeting “Updates in Research with Medical Devices” at IE University (Madrid) last Thursday, January 16th. An event covering several topics, including perspectives from regulatory agencies, ethics bodies and committees, the healthcare technology industry, and data protection.

Nearly 1,000 days after the implementation of the MDR, leaders in medical research reviewed progress made and the persistent challenges in critical areas such as:

Regulation and Ethics in Research: How agencies and ethics committees are responding to new requirements and ensuring compliance.
Innovation in Healthcare Technology: The impact of the MDR on the development of healthcare technologies and how companies are adjusting their processes.
Data Protection and Security: Key aspects of managing health research data, ensuring confidentiality and security.

In her presentation, Helena Rodríguez, data scientist at MADRIJA, presented an example of how Enigma CIS works. A citizen with multiple conditions is treated at several healthcare centers; the problem is that the patient undergoes duplicate tests (lab work, CT scans, etc.) at different centers, with the associated travel and healthcare costs that entails. Thanks to Enigma, the physician can see the results of tests performed at another hospital, avoiding redundant testing.

These events are an invaluable platform for dialogue and collaboration between regulators, researchers, and healthcare technology companies, creating an environment where innovation can flourish within the regulatory framework.

The main objectives of this Foundation are:

To foster excellence in the Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases through Transcatheter Percutaneous Techniques in order to achieve the greatest possible benefit for patients’ cardiovascular health.

To serve as a vehicle for education, Training, Research and Innovation in the Field of Interventional Cardiology.

To be a forum for meeting, Generating and Exchanging Knowledge among members of the Community of Interventional Cardiologists and Related Professionals.

To build collaborative ties with other Organizations, Scientific Societies or Private Companies in order to achieve shared goals in improving the cardiovascular health of the population.
