We Attend the ACI-SEC Congress in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Jul 1, 2024

The Interventional Cardiology Association of the Spanish Society of Cardiology held its annual congress from June 12th to 14th in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, an event that brings together nearly 800 experts from across Spain in the diagnosis and percutaneous treatment of cardiovascular disease.

This specialty has undergone a remarkable evolution over the last two decades thanks to advances in knowledge, technological development, and solid scientific evidence. Despite this, ischemic heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death in Spain, making it essential to implement prevention-focused programs.

Specialists agree that the widespread rollout of Heart Attack Code programs is one of the measures that has saved the most lives in cardiology. “These programs organize the immediate transfer of patients suffering a myocardial infarction to an interventional cardiology unit to open the coronary occlusion causing the cardiac damage as soon as possible”, explains Dr. Cid.

During the congress, experts will examine the development of similar programs for other time-dependent conditions requiring the earliest possible interventional procedure, such as cardiogenic shock or pulmonary thromboembolism.

In addition, for the first time, a theoretical-practical training course was organized for cardiology residents and interventional cardiologists currently in training.

The ACI-SEC annual congress also featured theoretical-practical sessions, as well as live case resolutions via connections with hospitals in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. A dedicated program for nursing staff and another for senior diagnostic imaging technicians were held simultaneously.
