From Alejandro Escario’s Vision to Global Impact: In3, a Decade of Innovation Recognized at the Princess of Girona Awards

Feb 5, 2025

What began a decade ago as an academic project driven by Alejandro Escario at Fab Lab Madrid CEU has become a globally recognized medical solution. The low-cost In3 incubator, developed by MADRIJA’s current CTO with the support of CEU San Pablo University and MIT’s FabAcademy program, was born with a clear purpose: to give countries with limited resources access to medical technology.

From its initial conception by Escario to its evolution thanks to the efforts of a team of dedicated volunteers, In3’s journey has left an outstanding mark. Recognized at forums such as Stanford’s Medicine X, Commit, and the World Congress of Perinatal Medicine, it has benefited citizens in more than 30 countries, with 60 incubators distributed and more than 30,000 hours of telemetry recorded. And on the back of these figures comes one of the most prestigious honors awarded in Spain.

Pablo Sánchez Bergasa, current president of Medical Open World, has received the Princess of Girona Award. This honor recognizes his leadership in expanding the project and his dedication to social innovation. At MADRIJA we want to celebrate this milestone and emphasize the importance of continuing to drive initiatives that improve people’s lives; technology as the most powerful tool for closing the distance between worlds.

A legacy of innovation and commitment

This award not only recognizes the work of Pablo Sánchez Bergasa, but also reaffirms the vision behind In3’s creation: making health more accessible through technology. Alejandro Escario, founder of the project and previously honored with the CEU Ángel Herrera ‘Alumni Júnior’ Award for this creation, emphasizes the importance of collaboration and open knowledge:

“Seeing how In3 has grown and continues saving lives fills me with pride. What started as a prototype in a lab has become a real solution for thousands of babies around the world. This award recognizes the whole team that has made it possible for In3 to keep evolving.”

At Madrija, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation with social impact, and we encourage everyone to collaborate with Medical Open World, whether through technical support, outreach, or donations.
