The Toledo Medical Association held its 6th Doctors’ Week on April 26th and 27th, an event that once again brought together professionals from the province to discuss the most current issues. Ismael Moreno, CEO of Madrija and head of the “IT and Digital Health” working group of the Official College of Computer Engineering of Castilla-La Mancha, took part in the panel discussion “Artificial Intelligence and Applications in Health and Healthcare”, moderated by the COMT secretary, Raúl Calvo. Joining him were Dr. Julio Mayol, Head of Surgery at Hospital Clínico San Carlos and director of the Innovation Unit at the San Carlos Health Research Institute, and Miguel Ángel Máñez, from the Management Group at Hospital Príncipe de Asturias in Madrid and professor of the University Master’s Degree in “Technology Management and Planning” at UNIR.

Dr. Mayol emphasized that “we are moving toward an Artificial Intelligence that replaces human capabilities, and Medical Associations have a fundamental role to play, because this is going to be a different world and it will be necessary to join forces with other professionals such as IT specialists, anthropologists… to move forward together and adapt to a new reality. Society is going to change at a certain pace, and the healthcare system risks falling out of step, which is why we must adapt”.

For his part, Ismael Moreno explained that “this type of technology is going to be a great help for physicians, and that these systems are not being created to replace anyone, but rather to help improve diagnosis”, he noted. He also stressed the importance of professionals adapting. “It is necessary to train people; we have to adapt, and the sooner you do it, the better, because technology moves very fast and must be integrated with your healthcare system”.

In summary, this panel emphasized that Artificial Intelligence will provide a clear advantage to the healthcare system and support for diagnosis.
